Exercise for the “Effect” or for the “Joy” of It?

Some come for Strength, some for Routine, some just to Clear their Heads or maybe it’s the Connection that they need in that moment.
Last week, during the pre-class banter before a "Live" class, I had this realization. It makes me ponder... what truly draws us back to movement time and time again?
Why do you move your body?
Is it for the effect…
to burn calories, lose weight, change your appearance, or reach a certain outcome?
Or is it for the joy…
to feel more energized, clear your mind, lift your mood, connect with others, or simply enjoy how your body feels when it moves?
Most of us have lived in both of these spaces. The real challenge is finding the sweet spot between them.
Let’s talk about the “effect.”
Are you tired of dreading the number on the scale…looking in the mirror at a body that feels unfamiliar…or scrolling through Instagram wishing you could rewind the clock?
If so, you are not alone. So many women experience this. But we cannot let it disconnect us from our bodies.
Years ago, one of my girlfriends told me she just wanted to fit into her high school jeans. She was over 60, living a full and beautiful life and honestly looked fantastic. And I remember thinking…why are we still measuring ourselves against who we used to be?
Because the truth is, no woman looks the same after childbirth, menopause, or simply living a full life. And we shouldn’t.
What we can do is embrace this chapter with movement. Our bodies change, but our capacity for strength does not.
Movement becomes less about proving something and more about supporting ourselves. Our focus shifts toward longevity, mobility, independence, and simply feeling good in our skin.
We begin to reframe the conversation…from fixing to caring and from what I look like, to how I live.
And when joy leads, everything changes.
Movement becomes something you get to do, not something you have to do. Consistency starts to feel natural. The dread softens and fades.
You begin to notice different wins…better sleep, steadier moods, stronger posture, deeper breaths, more energy, more confidence in everyday life.
And here’s the irony…the physical results often follow when joy leads.
If you want to reconnect with that joy:
• Choose movement based on your mood, not obligation.
• Notice one non-aesthetic win after every session.
• Let some workouts be light, playful, and social.
Remember…not every workout needs to be tough.
Make movement your habit.
Consistency, Connection, Support, and Encouragement are what I hope to give you through this Community.
Because the effect will come and go. But the joy…that’s what keeps you moving.
Cheers to staying Happy, Healthy, and Fit.
